April 24 @ 6:30 pm
The League of Women Voters of Lincoln County (LWVLC) will host a Candidates’ Forum in Newport on Tuesday, April 24th in the Community Meeting room of Atonement Lutheran Church. Attendees are invited to arrive at 6:30 pm for a half hour “meet and greet” session with the participating candidates.
The formal program will begin at 7:00 pm and will feature the candidates for County Commissioner and Circuit Court Judge and will be facilitated by Jean Cowan, President of LWVLC. Sheriff Curtis Landers will also be available to explain the proposed Public Safety Levy, Measure 21-186, on the May 2018 Primary Ballot.
The individuals seeking the County Commissioner Position 1 seat include incumbent Doug Hunt and challengers Virginia (Jenny) Demaris, Kim Herring, and Betty Kamikawa. For the Position 3 seat, incumbent Terry Thompson is being challenged by Kaety Jacobson. All six individuals have confirmed their attendance at the forum.
The Primary Ballot also includes Judge of Circuit Court, Lincoln County, District 17. Judge Paulette Sanders is unopposed for position 2, but Judge Tom Branford is challenged for position 3 by Russell Baldwin, an attorney living in Lincoln City. Both Branford and Baldwin have agreed to participate in the forum discussion.
Winners of the contested races will be determined by the outcome of the May 15 election, with the possible exception of County Commissioner Position 3. With four candidates seeking that seat, if one individual receives more than 50% of the votes cast that person is elected. If not, the top two contenders will face a runoff in the November General Election. No minimum voter turnout is required.
LWVLC is committed to voter education and invites all interested Lincoln County electors to come and hear from those seeking election to these important positions.
